Color your journey, color your world
The focus of the Honours Programme Liberal Arts & Sciences is Personal Development by Bildung. This creates possibilities for meaningful learning with and for our community. We combine the classical Liberal Arts & Sciences: the disciplines of philosophy, literature, anthropology and history with arts, creativity and personal coaching.
We benefit from the rich diversity of our community to provide depth and meaning to our experiences. We share and exchange new perspectives about life, that which characterizes us, and that which is different (the things that we own and the things that are ‘other’ to us). We reflect on relevant global societal issues where they are meaningful to the community.
The Liberal Arts are a means to make the connection between reflective professional competences and the person as a whole.
For this experiment we connect Bildung with the Inner Development Goals (IDG’s) and create a Development Compass as a compass and reflection tool to navigate any learning journey.
We want to use the IDG’s to support Bildung. The Inner Development Goals function as core competences of our programme. We see the Inner Development Goals as a ‘living’ document that can be supplemented and changed.
The Inner Development Compass is a tool we want to experiment with in order to visualize and to stimulate the process of Bildung.
Students engage in an open way to learning experiences, broaden their focus and maybe even move beyond their bias.
The target group consists of students and teachers of all educational programmes of Saxion.
We expect to transform the focus from fabricated learning goals and move from forced reflection to an emergent and authentic learning journey.
Students no longer formulate learning goals as we expect them to do, in order to avoid ‘socially desired’ goals and reflections as well as anticipated outcomes.
In order for the experiment to be successful it is required to review our vision on student development and leave aside a narrow focus on learning goals and expected outcome. So there is room for a broader learning experience where meaning can emerge for the student and the community.
This means to broaden the focus on professional competences and take a human approach to learning as explained in the Inner Development Goals.
The ideas for this experiment are well received among our HP students. They recognize the idea of fabricated learning goals as well as ‘made up’ reflections.
We develop the Inner Development Compass together with the students. They are currently making their own ‘prototype’.
This is a somewhat confusing and messy, and therefore interesting process. The students will present their prototypes, which we will evaluate together to move to the next step of this experiment.
