Do you want to learn about the latest nanotechnology developments in your field of study? Are you willing to work with other specialists? Positioned in Enschede (in the region of Twente) Saxion-Nanotechnology is an excellent starting point for a career in this field.
Twente is rapidly becoming the centre for nanotechnology due to the presence of Saxion, the University of Twente, the MESA + Institute and dozens of (start-up) companies that operate in this field.
Nanotechnology is expected to have an major impact on existing disciplines. (Bio)medical and chemical laboratories will undergo drastic changes thanks to nano- and micro-technology that will revolutionise production, analysis, diagnosis and treatment techniques. Novel materials with unique properties will emerge, which for instance can drastically alter energy production and storage. Nanotechnology will shape the future.
Target group are fulltime students of the programmes Applied Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Biology and Medical Laboratory Techniques, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Technical Informatics and Mechatronics. The minor can serve as an excellent preparation to the 2-year Master study Nanotechnology at Saxion.
Nanotechnology permeates all technical disciplines and engages in the creation of applications based on structures and devices with dimensions of less than 0.1 micrometre. Nanotechnology is at the forefront of technological developments, but discoveries at universities need to be transformed into new products and applications. This requires a connection of the nano-world of atoms, molecules and nanoparticles, to the macro-world of humans and products. This is the primary task of a HBO-nanotechnologist. In this minor, you will learn the fundamentals that govern micro- and nano-technology, as well as explore various applications of these.
The student is expected to devote full-time effort to the minor, which comprises 30 credits.
In the theory lectures you will learn what distinguishes the nano-world from the macro-world, and how these differences manifest themselves. Topics from the various disciplines that form the basis of nanotechnology will be discussed, as well as the application fields of nanotechnology (e.g. Lab-on-a-Chip sensors). A number of laboratory experiments will learn you how micro- and nanotechnology works in practice. During the minor you will have to work together with students from all disciplines involved and consequently you will learn to understand each other's specific jargon and point of view. This knowledge is in turn one of the cornerstones for a successful career in the field of nanotechnology. English is the main language for course materials, books, lectures and reports.
For all courses the study-results will be graded (1-10), based on written exams & presentations for the theory courses and (lab)reports for the practical training.
