ALIGN
Automatic optical fiber alignment for Fiber Optic Gyroscope production
The KIEM High Tech project ALIGN aims to improve fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) production by automating the current manual alignment process of optical fibers and the light source. In aviation, where precision and reliability are crucial, FOGs play an essential role in measuring the orientation changes of aircraft. Consistent production of FOGs leads to more reliable and safer aircraft.

Although the product meets aviation requirements, the current production method causes variability in sensor performance, and the reasons for this are not fully understood. The consortium, consisting of Patria, IMS, and the Applied Nanotechnology (ANT) research group at Saxion, aims to demonstrate a proof-of-concept for automated alignment, focusing on fiber detection and manipulation, alignment algorithms, and stable performance of the final product.
The innovative aspect includes researching suitable automation methods, considering the fixation of optical components by soldering. Current automation solutions are expensive and not always suitable for fixing optical components at high temperatures.
The project plan includes various activities, such as research into fiber manipulation and control, vision, and integration and verification. The goal is to create a working proof-of-concept demonstrator that meets the production process and end product requirements. The knowledge from this project will be incorporated into educational modules of various programs and can serve as a precursor to a follow-up project in the RAAK SME program.
The consortium aims to understand the critical steps in fiber optic alignment and develop an automated solution for consistent FOG production. The project not only contributes to the aviation industry but also has broader applications, such as in the alignment of photonic integrated circuits, making it a valuable contribution to the development of advanced production processes in the optical fibers industry.
