RAAK Publiek Bevers: BEheer Van kritiEke infrastructuren door opsporing van bevers met onbemande Robotische Systemen
This project develops autonomous robots with advanced sensors to detect and monitor beaver burrows in critical infrastructures.
Saxion University of Applied Sciences is investigating the possible use of unmanned robotic systems with various sensor packages for detecting and monitoring beavers in critical infrastructures. The number of beaver burrows in these infrastructures (including water barriers, railway embankments and roads) has increased rapidly in recent years.

In this research project, various robot platforms are being developed and tested, equipped with autonomous navigation and detection modules consisting of various sensors. Successful detection and monitoring requires robust technologies that can observe tunnel systems and chambers and map them independently, even in hard-to-reach places. This is based on experiences from previous research projects in the field of soil research with drones, walking and driving robots, equipped with for example Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) or electronic scent detection (e-Nose).
Expected outcome/results
State of the art technology overview, manual for field workers to use the technologies (and when to use which), path planning software modules for efficient area coverage, sensor packages with online data acquisition and monitoring capabilities, field test and verification reports and live demonstrations of the developed technology.
