The IFFS project
The IFFS Project (formerly known as IFEX) is focused on saving lives, reducing risks for firefighters, and minimizing the likelihood of major fires. By utilizing advanced technologies, it aims to provide faster and more accurate information to fire services, while reducing property damage caused by fires and excessive water use in conventional fire fighting approaches.
The project also aims to inform the fire service faster and better in advance about the current circumstances and reduce the damage to properties due to fire and large amounts of water used in the current conventional approach.
At the core of the project is IFFS’s impulse-based firefighting technology, which uses kinetic energy to effectively extinguish fires. The system propels water with high-pressure air, producing a fine mist that rapidly lowers fire temperatures and dissipates oxygen as it evaporates. This innovative approach enhances efficiency while using minimal water.

The IFFS Project is a collaborative effort between IFFS USA and Saxion SMART to tackle fire-extinguishing challenges by integrating the IFFS system with drone technology. The ultimate goal is to develop a lightweight, scalable, semi-autonomous, and multi-purpose IFFS Drone capable of operating in diverse safety and security scenarios.
The project explores several sub-research questions, including:
- Investigating limitations of the current proof-of-concept (outcome of the I2FEX project),
- Detecting and localizing targets in extreme environmental conditions,
- Designing interaction control methodologies for effective fire extinguishing, and
- Determining optimal deployment scenarios for the IFFS Drone.
The vision is to develop a semi-autonomous drone capable of 24/7 operation, able to extinguish fires rapidly in confined spaces, remote locations, or hard-to-reach areas. The drone will operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and adapt to a variety of challenging environments.
Ultimately, the IFFS Project seeks to revolutionize firefighting by leveraging drone technology to deliver firefighting solutions in a safe, efficient, and precise manner. This innovative approach has the potential to save lives, mitigate risks for firefighters, and minimize the damage caused by fires, setting a new standard for fire safety and emergency response.
