ROS Industrial Training Center

In the last decade, Robot Operating System (ROS, https://www.ros.org/) has become the de-facto standard in robotics research and development. ROS is a framework that provides all kind of robotic functionality, it provides a way to develop distributed systems, it provides all tools to develop and test systems. Moreover, it provides an active worldwide community.

ROS Industrial is an initiative to bring the functionality of ROS to industry. At Saxion, we have started a ROS Industrial training center where we give ROS Industrial Trainings aimed at companies. The goal of the training center is to increase ROS awareness and knowledge in these regions by providing these trainings.

Project approach

We organize two-day trainings where you get to know the fundamentals of ROS Industrial on the first day. On the second day we address two application areas: Vision combined with Manipulation & Autonomous Navigation. For the manipulation, we use a Franka Emika cobot. For the autonomous navigation, we use a differential drive robot in combination with a camera and visual tags. The goal of the training is to provide a basis to start working on ROS. Participants will benefit from the full potential of ROS and will eventually be able to actively benefit from and contribute to the ROS community. The materials we use are open and available for anybody to use.

Project goal

The training center aims to better educate students and professional developers in the eastern part of the Netherlands in using ROS. The region has a high number of machine builders, often with a more traditional background. By offering these trainings, we increase the ROS awareness. This way, companies can apply the benefits that ROS provides.
