Master Applied Quantum Technology
The master’s programme in Quantum Technology focuses on emerging technologies that harness quantum-mechanical systems to drive groundbreaking advancements in computing, communication, and sensing. In this programme, you will explore how phenomena like superposition and entanglement can be applied to enable new methods of computation, communication, and sensing – with faster speeds and unprecedented precision. Quantum Technology is a multidisciplinary field, drawing on expertise from physics, mathematics, computer science, electronics, and engineering.
What is the programme in brief?
During this master, you will broaden your horizon from classical technologies to quantum technologies. This includes learning about quantum mechanics and quantum computing, but also about all the surrounding technologies, such as classical computing, photonics and electronics. To master these topics, you will study both theory and engage in hands-on practice. Together with your peers, you will form multidisciplinary teams to solve problems relevant to the current quantum industry. In these projects, you will get closely acquainted with the engineering cycles, which is essential for becoming a quantum engineer.
Joint Degree
The Master’s in Applied Quantum Technology is a cooperation between four Dutch universities of applied sciences: Amsterdam, Fontys, Saxion, and The Hague.
Specialisations
Every one of the four universities of applied science has unique expertise on specific aspects of quantum technology. During this master, you will be able to profit from this extensive network and expertise: you will use unique lab facilities, be coached by experts on the different research areas, and have the opportunity to do an internship at local quantum companies and start-ups. In the last quarter of the first year, you will choose one of the three specialisations: quantum software, quantum electronics or quantum photonics.
Overview of the expertises contributed to the master AQT:
Amsterdam UAS | Location: Amsterdam | Software |
The Hague UAS | Location: Delft | Photonics and Electronics |
Saxion UAS | Location: Enschede | Photonics and Electronics |
Fontys UAS | Location: Eindhoven | Photonics and Software |
Possible professions
- Quantum Engineer
- Specialist in quantum technology
Course programme and location
This unique master has a two-year programme and can be started at each of the four universities. Because of the highly specific topics, you will have to travel to the different locations. Generally, you will travel one or two times a week to another location (average travel time: 2 times 2.5 hours per day). On the other days, you will have a mixture of online lessons, lessons on your ‘home’-location and project time. These projects will, as much as possible, be supervised by a local lecturer.
The course consists of:
- Introduction: this will take place during the first quarter of the master. You will get to know the other students, see the different locations and follow courses depending on your bachelor.
- Core: this part will be the same for all students and will be taught in the second and third quarter. There will be courses on quantum hardware (both electronics and photonics) and on quantum software. Everything you learn here will form a strong foundation for your specialisation.
- Specialisation: you will choose one of the three specialisations: quantum software, quantum electronics or quantum photonics. With a combination of theory, lab sessions and projects, you will dive deeper into your chosen quantum technology.
- Graduation internship: you will finish your degree by proving you can function in a real life situation at a company or an applied research group.
The demand for specialists in quantum technology is growing, so your skills are likely to be highly sought after, especially by companies and institutions at the forefront of technological innovation.
