Partnerships, facilities and quality assurance

Facilities

Besides research facilities within the premises of Saxion, we have unique test locations in the basement of one of the building of the Saxion city campus in Enschede and at the nearby wastewater treatment plant Glanerburg.

The official commissioning of the TRENDY Water Center (TWC) in January 2024 adds a new dimension to the experimental possibilities of our research group. This field lab can be used to conduct research into all aspects of water reuse. The centre also serves as a full-scale demonstrator. The TWC is also used for education, demonstration and valorisation of the research. This field lab currently houses a compact decentralised purification system for domestic wastewater (BluElephant) and a compact, decentralised multi-stage installation for upgrading rainwater and groundwater to drinking water quality (A-Quality); there is space available to set up new demonstrators.

A great success for the region in which we and our professor in particular have played a significant role, is the realization of the 'Water Experiment Center of Twente' (WECTwente), located on the WWTP Glanerbrug. It is a joint initiative of Pentair X-Flow, Jotem Water Treatment, RWB, Saxion and the water board Vechtstromen, where companies are working together with an educational and research institute, end-users, and governmental institutions. Previously, researchers had to investigate new purification techniques at a small-scale testing set-up in a lab or at location in a sea container. In the indoor hall, new technologies can be tested directly on the different water flows available at a wastewater treatment plant. One of the advantages is that the companies involved can show their potential customers a working installation under real life conditions

The aspirations for the research group IWT are two-fold: on the one hand facilitating companies or end-users that want to carry out smaller research projects and do not have the research facilities and/or crew; on the other hand, the cooperation with the ROC of Twente and the University of Twente by deploying their students in the research projects through internships and/or (MSc/PhD) thesis projects.

Quality assurance

Quality of research is very important at Saxion. Together we work on a strong quality culture, using widely supported and workable instruments and facilitated by quality assurance employees specifically for research. We look at what is going well and how we can further utilise that. In this way, quality assurance supports the design and implementation of practice-oriented research with impact. We use the national standards that apply to conducting practice-oriented research, the Brancheprotocol Kwaliteitszorg Onderzoek. By organising quality assurance smartly, we are continuously inspectable. We endorse the Nederlandse Gedragscode Wetenschappelijke Integriteit.
