Discover light in the Minor Architectural Lighting Design (bilingual EN/NL)

In the minor Architectural Lighting Design you work on a challenging design assignment, comparable to a professional project. The lessons are hybrid: you follow two physical lesson days per week, supplemented with knowledge clips and self-study. Seminars, guest lectures and consultations are combined with excursions and possibly a study trip to inspiring locations.

You will be guided by experienced design teachers and experts who will delve into lighting design and lighting technology. The study load is 30 EC, with approximately 15 contact hours per week. You will learn, both individually and as a team, how to use light to enhance atmosphere, experience and functionality in spatial designs. This minor offers you the opportunity to gain practical experience, explore technologies and use light as a design element in an innovative way.

During Monitor moments you discuss your progress with your coach based on registrations: where you stand (feedback), what your goal is (feedup) and what steps you still need to take (feedforward). During the Balance Moment, you and a coach will discuss  your development and get an overview of the steps needed to achieve the final level.

The Decision moment takes place at the end of the minor. Here, based on all collected registrations, it will be assessed whether you have reached the required level. You will have a decision interview with two examiners, during which you will receive feedback and specific advice for your further study career.

Activities

• The lectures (in the form of knowledge clips) are given by content experts.
• The guidance takes place at both an individual level and at a group level.

The minor is intended for 3rd and/or 4th year bachelor students of Interior Design, Architecture (BBT) and Urban Design (ABR&R). This concerns the courses: Design, Minerva Academy, Architectural design, Gerrit Rietveld academy, All-round styling, Artemis academy, Spatial Design, Willem de Kooning academy and Utrecht University of the Arts, Interior architecture, Artez and Interior architecture and furniture design, KABK.

Admission of students from other and above-mentioned programs is assessed on the basis of a motivation that shows the connection with the education offered. Are you studying a related bachelor's program and do you want to take the minor? Then please contact the minor contact person.

This minor is offered bilingually. The group of students is combined, and the attending lecturers speak both Dutch and English. Minor in Dutch.

Why this minor?
Light is playing an increasingly important role in an increasing number of disciplines. In interior design and architecture, and in design of outdoor spaces, public spaces and urban environments. But also in other fields such as game and animation design, exhibitions, museums and retail. Due to the enormous development of LED technology and its control, the possibilities are growing rapidly. This creates a growing need for knowledge of technology and the meaningful use of light in projects. Light is increasingly becoming an integral part of spatial design. And more and more attention is being paid to topics such as sustainability and energy consumption and ecology, lighting comfort, and the biological and psychological effects of light (Human Centric Lighting). Due to the increasing possibilities with light and the increasing attention to quality and experience, the substantiated, meaningful and qualitative use of light is becoming increasingly important.

At the end of the period, your design and process will be assessed based on summative criteria: technology, culture, creativity, business and reasoning. During the summative test you present and justify a professional product, a well-substantiated design, in which you have addressed an issue or problem from professional practice.

There are also formative Portfolio Checks where you present your work and receive feedback from fellow students. You present (partial) products, evaluate the process, provide feedback and receive feedback from fellow students (peer feedback). You also make agreements to optimize your progress.
